Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is an acute febrile disease caused by the hantaviruses and occurring predominately in Asia. Hantaan virus is widely distributed in eastern Asia, particularly in China, Russia, and Korea. Hantaviruses are carried and transmitted by rodents. People can become infected with these viruses and develop HFRS after exposure to urine droplets in the air, to droppings or saliva or to dust from their nests. Direct transmission into broken skin or onto the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, or mouth can also cause an infection. Individuals who work with live rodents are at high risk to get infected through bites. Human to human transmissions are rare. The disease is characterised by fever, prostation, vomiting, haemorrhagic phenonema, shock, and renal failure. Bivalent and purified HFRS vaccine is derived from a mixture of HFRS virus type I (Z10 strain) and type II (Z37 strain) grown separately on primary cell cultre of gerbil mouse kidney cells. The strains for vaccine production are supplied by HFRS Laboratory of Zhejiang CDC and are registered by the Chinese State Food and Drug Administration. After inactivation with beta-propiolactone, the intermediates are further purified using centrifugation, ultrafiltration, chromatography and filtration steps. The final formulation also contains human serum albumin for stabilization, aluminium hydroxide as adjuvant, as well as Thiomersal as a preservative. Tianyuan's bivalent and purified HFRS vaccine "YOUERJIAN" is a highly effective vaccine for the prevention of infections by epidemic haemorrhagic fever.
